Four Global Consortia Compete for Major Contract in North Field’s Multi-Phase Offshore Sustainability Project
Qatar Plans $5 Billion Offshore Projects to Boost North Field Gas Production

The global energy-focused outlet Upstream has revealed that Qatar is planning four massive offshore projects worth an estimated $5 billion in the North Field—the world’s largest gas field. Leading engineering and construction companies are set to submit technical bids to QatarEnergy LNG for the critical COMP 5 offshore compression project.

At least four major international consortiums are competing for the high-value contract, which falls under the next phase of Qatar’s extensive North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) initiative. This initiative is designed to ensure long-term gas output from the massive field.

According to the report, Qatar is investing heavily in expanding the North Field while simultaneously executing a multi-phase offshore sustainability project aimed at increasing LNG production with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility.

The NFPS includes several development phases, such as North Field East, North Field South, and North Field West, aiming to ramp up LNG production from the current 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 126 mtpa by 2027—with projections reaching 142 mtpa by 2030.

The sustainability initiative incorporates carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce emissions and improve the environmental footprint of LNG facilities and upstream operations. QatarEnergy has also signed several international agreements to supply LNG, reinforcing Qatar’s position as the world's top LNG producer and exporter.

Production from the North Field East project is expected to commence by mid-2026.
