Experts: High Costs and Skills Shortage Challenge Smart City Expansion

A number of experts and engineers affirmed that Qatar is accelerating its transition toward smart cities and sustainable buildings by implementing strategic projects based on advanced construction technologies. These initiatives improve operational efficiency, reduce energy and water consumption, enhance quality of life, and support the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

The experts noted that smart buildings have become a key pillar of future urban development, offering significant benefits such as lower operating and maintenance costs, reduced carbon emissions, improved resource efficiency, and healthier, more comfortable living environments.

However, they pointed out that wider adoption in the private residential sector still faces challenges, including high initial investment costs, limited awareness of long-term economic benefits, the need for more specialized national expertise, and the expansion of local industries capable of producing technologies suited to Qatar's environment.

They emphasized that promoting sustainable construction practices, supported by effective incentives and policies, will accelerate the adoption of smart buildings and strengthen Qatar's position as a regional leader in sustainable urban development.
