Ministry of Municipality Implements Four Strategic Projects to Support Urban Planning and Food Security
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center at the Ministry of Municipality has achieved several significant technological and strategic milestones through the implementation of four key projects aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure, improving planning and monitoring capabilities, and strengthening resource management across Qatar.
The projects included the use of artificial intelligence to detect violations through aerial imagery, conducting a marine aerial survey using LiDAR technology, developing agricultural and food security data systems, and launching the first phase of Qatar’s Digital Twin project.
In the agriculture and food security sector, the center established a unified platform linking farm and agricultural activity data while developing advanced spatial and statistical reports, interactive dashboards, and historical aerial image comparison services covering the period from 1963 to 2025.
The center also launched the first phase of the Digital Twin project in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and the Public Works Authority, utilizing AI and geospatial analytics to support urban simulation models and improve infrastructure, asset, road network, and wastewater management.
In the marine sector, the center completed an advanced aerial bathymetric survey covering approximately 10 kilometers of coastline, producing accurate digital models of seabed elevations, coral reefs, and islands while updating national marine databases.
Additionally, the center strengthened field monitoring capabilities by developing advanced machine-learning models to automatically detect violations, creating an integrated geospatial database, and introducing a digital application that enables municipal inspectors to efficiently document and track violations.
These initiatives highlight the GIS Center’s vital role in supporting digital transformation, advancing smart infrastructure, enhancing government services, and enabling data-driven decision-making.
