QatarEnergy has continued expanding its global fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in the low-emission fuel market. The company attended the naming ceremony of two new LNG vessels at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea.
Each vessel has a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters and is equipped with X-DF 2.1 iCER dual-fuel engines, which allow the use of both fuel oil and boil-off gas. This advanced technology reduces fuel consumption and enhances overall operational efficiency.
The carriers are also fitted with systems to re-liquefy excess boil-off gas, improving sailing efficiency and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions—an approach that aligns with QatarEnergy’s environmental sustainability goals for its maritime fleet.
The first vessel has been named “Sharq”, and it is scheduled to begin transporting LNG globally during December. The second vessel, named “Sheraouh”—after an island located northeast of Khor Al Adaid in Qatar—will officially enter service in January 2026, with a Japanese company handling its operational management.
