Qatar’s Energy Minister: No Gas Supplies to Europe Unless Sustainability Law is Eased
If Europe does not relax or cancel the sustainability rules, we will certainly not supply energy to Europe.”
His Excellency Eng. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, warned that Qatar will not supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe unless the European Union reviews or repeals its new sustainability directive.
Speaking during a ministerial session at ADIPEC 2025 in Abu Dhabi, Al-Kaabi noted that the penalties imposed under the directive — amounting to 5% of global revenues — pose a major obstacle to energy cooperation, stating:
> “If Europe does not relax or cancel these rules, we will certainly not supply energy to Europe.”
He reaffirmed that Qatar has previously made its position clear, emphasizing that achieving carbon neutrality under the current conditions is not feasible, adding, “Europe needs to understand that.”
