HE Eng. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy, and Mr. Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, announced today in Baghdad, alongside H.E. Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, the commencement of the Common Seawater Supply Project and Phase 2 of the Artawi oil field redevelopment.

These two projects represent the final building blocks of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) in Iraq, a multi-billion-dollar initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and enhancing energy security. The project is being developed through a strategic partnership between QatarEnergy (25%), TotalEnergies (45% - operator), and Basra Oil Company (30%).

During the official signing ceremony, attended by senior Iraqi officials including Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, the partners also signed a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to the successful delivery of all components of the GGIP.

Commenting on the occasion, HE Al-Kaabi said:

The Common Seawater Supply Project will process and transport 5 million barrels of seawater per day to major oil fields in southern Iraq, significantly reducing the withdrawal of freshwater from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers by 250,000 cubic meters daily. This will help ease water scarcity pressures and enhance Iraq’s long-term water security.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the Artawi redevelopment will boost production to 210,000 barrels per day by 2028, while positioning the field among Iraq’s lowest-emission oil production sites.

The $13+ billion GGIP also includes the recovery of flared gas from three southern oil fields to fuel power generation, the development of additional oil resources, and the construction of a 1 GW solar power plant — underscoring the project’s strategic role in advancing Iraq’s sustainable energy future.
