Kahramaa Advances Smart Meter Project to Boost Efficiency and Support Digital Transformation
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa)

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) continues to implement its Smart Meter Project aimed at enhancing resource efficiency and improving service quality. The project empowers consumers to monitor their electricity and water usage accurately, promoting responsible consumption and laying the foundation for a smart infrastructure that aligns with the country’s digital transformation strategy.

The strategic plan targets the installation of 600,000 smart meters powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with Vodafone, which provides the necessary network infrastructure, and Siemens, which supplies advanced technologies and systems for smart control, billing, monitoring, and remote real-time reading.

Significant progress has been made so far, with 42% of the meters already installed. The completion rate is expected to reach 49% by the end of 2021. Based on scientifically structured statistical plans, 420,000 smart electricity meters are scheduled to be installed by the end of Q2 2022, with the project set for full completion by the end of 2023.

The smart meter system has already delivered positive outcomes, enabling a 97% success rate in monthly billing readings and allowing for final meter readings to be completed within just 10 minutes. Moreover, it provides the ability to remotely disconnect and reconnect electricity service within approximately 5 minutes after payment, demonstrating the project's contribution to service efficiency and digital readiness.
