Strategic Project Launched to Boost Power and Water Production in Qatar

Qatar Advances Energy and Water Security with Strategic Agreement for Major Ras Abu Fontas Power and Water Plant

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), in collaboration with QatarEnergy, Qatar Electricity and Water Company, and a consortium led by Sumitomo Corporation and Pearl Sky Energy Holding, has signed a strategic agreement to develop the new Ras Abu Fontas Power and Water Plant.

The facility will have a production capacity of 2,400 megawatts of electricity and 110 million gallons of water per day. It will be commissioned in phases, beginning in April 2028 and reaching full capacity by June 2029. Once fully operational, the plant will supply approximately 23% of Qatar's electricity and 20% of its water needs, with a total investment of around QAR 13.5 billion.

The agreement also includes provisions for the purchase of electricity and water produced by the facility, reinforcing supply security amid growing population and economic demand, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

The agreement was signed in the presence of H.E. Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, who described the project as “a milestone in the country’s shift towards sustainable and advanced power and water infrastructure.” He commended the efforts of all partners for supporting sustainable development and the objectives of the 2024–2030 National Development Strategy.

H.E. Eng. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Thani, President of Kahramaa, stated that the project reflects the corporation’s commitment to building an efficient infrastructure that supports economic growth and enhances quality of life. Meanwhile, Eng. Mohammed Nasser Al-Hajri, CEO of Qatar Electricity and Water Company, noted that the use of advanced technologies will enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

John Minase, General Manager of Sumitomo’s Strategic Energy Solutions Unit, said the project aligns with the company’s mission to deliver stable energy and water supplies, contributing to Qatar’s sustainable growth.

The project also aims to reduce environmental impact through green technologies and advanced systems. A long-term carbon reduction plan over the next 15 years is expected to be implemented by the project developer in collaboration with Kahramaa, further affirming Qatar’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
