80% infrastructure work of Expo 2023 Doha completed: Municipality Minister

Doha, Qatar: Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie has said that about 80 percent of work on the development of the infrastructure for hosting the International Horticultural Exhibition Expo 2023 Doha has been completed.

The Minister, who is also Chairman of the Expo 2023 Doha Committee, said that the remaining 20 percent of works include some pavilions and temporary facilities which are being developed and are expected to be ready on time before October.

He said, so far, 70 countries have confirmed to participate in the Expo, a six-month long event, scheduled to be held from October 2, 2023, to March 28, 2024, in Al Bidda Park, which is expecting over 3 million visitors.

Al Subaie was speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of a signing ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Municipality.

The GCC General Secretariat yesterday signed an agreement to participate in a big way in the International Horticultural Exhibition Expo 2023 Doha.

The agreement was signed by Ambassador H E Badr bin Omar Al Dafa, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Climate Change and Sustainability, and Expo 2023 Doha Commissioner-General and Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Al Sheikh, Director General of the Office of the Economic and Development Affairs Authority and Commissioner General of the GCC Pavilion at Expo 2023 Doha.

Speaking about the importance of GCC General Secretariat’s participation, the Minister of Municipality said: “It is very important to support the Expo 2023 Doha. The participation will be added value in the efforts of GCC for promoting sustainability, tree plantation and greenery.”

Speaking at the event, GCC Secretary-General H E Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, said that following the agreement, a huge GCC pavilion entitled ‘Towards A Green Gulf.. For A Sustainable Environment’ will be set up at the Expo.

He said that the pavilion will showcase the most important issues of joint GCC work, plans and strategies in the field of environment and agriculture. 

Al Budaiwi said that the GCC pavilion will present initiatives in the areas of climate change, combating desertification, increasing vegetation cover and food security, in addition to other initiatives aimed at supporting small and medium enterprises and investing in the areas of the exhibition. He said that Qatar’s hosting of Expo 2023 Doha indicates the confidence of the international community in its ability and great distinction in hosting international events.

Al Budaiwi said that this expo comes at a very important time when the international community is discussing the best ways to preserve the earth’s environment and to ensure sustainability.

He said that following the decision of the esteemed Ministerial Council at its 154th, the GCC General Secretariat will be participating in Expo 2023Doha with its pavilion.

Eng Muhammad Ali Al Khouri, Secretary-General of Expo 2023 Doha, said that the partnership agreement of GCC General Secretariat is added to the list of partnerships in Expo 2023 Doha.

He noted that this partnership is an affirmation that this exhibition discusses extremely important topics related to the entire GCC, as reducing desertification and finding effective ways to achieve sustainability is a necessary requirement for all GCC countries.

Al Khouri said that the participation of GCC General Secretariat is an embodiment of solidarity among all GCC countries and a qualitative addition to this global exhibition.

He said that GCC pavilion will give an integrated picture of the joint Gulf action and highlight the contributions of the GCC countries to the efforts of global solidarity to achieve the goals of sustainable development. Al Khouri said the pavilion will demonstrate Gulf competencies and their successes in employing technology and innovation in modernizing and developing agriculture and directing Gulf capital towards profitable investments.
