The overall monthly Producer Price Index (PPI) of Qatar’s industrial sector for May 2021 was estimated at 65.7 points, showing an increase of 92.1 percent when compared to the PPI of the  corresponding month last year (May 2020). When compared on month-on-month (M-o-M) basis, the PPI of May 2021 showed an increase of 7.5 percent against PPI of the previous month (April 2021), official data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) showed. 

The Mining sector PPI registered an increase of 8.8 percent when compared with the PPI of April 2021, primarily due to the price increase of “Crude petroleum and natural gas” by 9.0 percent, and “Stone, Sand and Clay” increased by 0.6 percent. PPI of May 2021, when compared with its counterpart in previous year (May 2020), there was an increase of 117.2 percent. 

In the Manufacturing sector index, an increase of 5.2 percent was recorded in May 2021, when compared with the previous month’s Manufacturing index (April 2021). 

The prices increase were seen in: “Basic Chemicals” by 8.6 percent, followed by “Rubber and Plastics products” by 5.4 percent, “Refined Petroleum products” by 4.6 percent, “Paper and Paper products” by 4.5 percent, “Basic Metals” by 3.6 percent, “Juices” by 1.2 percent, and “Dairy products” by 0.6 percent, 

However, the decreasing prices were noticed in “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 1.1 percent, “Beverages” by 0.7 percent, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.2 percent. While no change was noticed in “Other chemical products and fibers”.

When compared with the previous year’s (May 2020) index, the Manufacturing PPI of May 2021 showed an increase of 58.9 percent. 

The major groups which explain this price increase were: “Refined Petroleum products” by 74.6 percent, followed by “Basic chemicals” by 66.8 percent, “Basic Metals” by 26.8 percent, “Paper and Paper Products” by 15.3 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 8.5 percent, “Juices” by 3.7 percent, and “Dairy products” by 0.4 percent. 

However, prices decreased in “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 8.1 percent, followed by “Beverages” by 1.1 percent, “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.7 percent, and “Other chemical products and fibers” by 0.4 percent.

The PPI of Electricity and Water group showed a decrease of 5.1 percent compared to April 2021, resulting from fall prices in “Electricity” by 7.9 percent, and “Water” by 2.2 percent. When compared the PPI of May 2021, to the PPI of May 2020 [Y-o-Y], showed an increase of 7.0 percent, affected by prices rise in “Water” by 17.2 percent, while “Electricity” price declined by 1.3 percent.
