QU's architecture, urban planning dept holds Virtual Architecture Day

The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP) at Qatar University’s (QU) College of Engineering recently held the Virtual Architecture Day 11/12 - version 2021, to display the graduate and undergraduate students’ projects.

The event was attended by Dr. Hassan Al Derham, QU President; Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji, QU-CENG Dean; Dr. Fodil Fadli, DAUP Head of Department; and guests, architects, and representatives from local and international institutions.

Dr. Al Derham commented, “Over the last decade, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning has become an increasingly important part of Qatar University’s story. Our architecture and urban planning graduates have embarked on their professional careers to become essential players in the Qatari government, industry, and society. Architecture Day is an annual opportunity to display our future professionals’ immense drive and talent in architecture and urban planning.”

He also pointed out that projects and designs consider sustainability, local cultural aspects, and quality standards in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Naji said that this is an annual day of the DAUP to exhibit projects that express the students’ designs and works, noting that the graduate students are also involved by contributing through their practical experiences.

DAUP Head Dr. Fadli said, “This year, 11-12th Architecture Day is considered very special and unique in its conception. It brings together efforts and outputs of two years of work since it was put on hold last year due to the circumstances imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. This day is important for all of us at DAUP.”

“The 11-12 AD includes narrating and sharing experiences of our students and graduates over virtual presentations. This would enable both students and faculty to share their experiences during their studies and research work. The architectural design projects of our students exhibit unlimited creativity and innovation skills.

"The virtual event concluded over a fascinating discussion involving architects and academics from Qatar and worldwide. We can confirm now that Architecture in Qatar has an even brighter future merging 21st-century digital technologies with local cultural, social, and environmental aspects. DAUP students and faculty will lead the way towards healthier resilient cities and buildings,” he added.

Dr. Fadli stressed out that the department is in continuous growth and prosperity. It always strives to provide the architecture discipline and profession in Qatar with highquality standards and relevant expertise locally and globally. This perfectly aligns with the growth and development, and the architectural and urban prosperity in Qatar, pointing out that the Bachelor of Architecture programme is internationally certified by the US-based National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

During the ceremony, winners of the Architectural Excellence Award Competition, which is sponsored by the Arab Engineering Bureau, were announced. The first prize went to Moza Ahmad J A AlObaidan, the second winner was Aljaze Rashid A A Al Naimi, while the third winner was Saaeda Nasser B E Al-Bader. Dr. Fadli wished everybody a safe and successful end of the Academic Year and greeted the audience with a positive message to meet during next year Architecture Day in a more “normal” circumstances.
