Qatar University Hosts Specialized Training on Road Safety Audit in Cooperation with International Bodies
Qatar University, represented by the College of Engineering, organized a specialized training course on road safety audit studies, in collaboration with the International Road Federation and the World Conference on Transport Research Society. This initiative reflects a joint commitment to enhancing road safety systems.
The training brought together over 35 engineers and road safety specialists from key national institutions, alongside representatives from engineering consultancy and contracting firms. Delivered by Dr. Wael El Haj Yassin from Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center and Mr. Miguel Santos, a traffic safety expert at the UN Office for Project Services, the course offered participants cutting-edge methodologies and tools to plan and implement road safety assessments at various project stages, in line with both local and global standards. Emphasis was placed on practical application and international best practices.
Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji, Dean of the College of Engineering, stressed that road safety remains a global concern, especially with the increasing number of accidents involving young drivers. He stated that the course is part of a broader effort to foster safer roads through education, research, and capacity building, highlighting the vital role played by the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center in achieving these goals.
Dr. Shaima Ali Al-Qaradaghi, Director of the Center, underscored the importance of proactive safety measures, noting that road safety audits are fundamental in identifying and predicting risks, enabling preventive actions to reduce accident likelihood. She reaffirmed the Center's alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by focusing on safe and sustainable transport planning.
At the conclusion of the course, it was announced that a follow-up training program focusing on work zone safety will be held in September, as part of the Center’s ongoing professional development series supporting national and regional expertise in the field.
