Al-Attiyah Foundation Highlights the Role of Natural Gas in Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Sustainability.

In early 2024, former U.S. President Joe Biden announced a halt to the expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, citing environmental concerns raised by a study conducted by Professor Robert Howarth. The study claimed that, in some cases, the carbon footprint of LNG could exceed that of coal. However, this assertion sparked significant controversy, as many experts questioned its validity and emphasized the well-established role of LNG in reducing emissions and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.

In this context, the Al-Attiyah Foundation for Energy released an analytical report titled “LNG: A Bridge to a Net-Zero Future.” The report explored the key differences between LNG and coal, critically analyzing Howarth’s claims and comparing them to data from reputable institutions such as the U.S. National Energy Technology Laboratory and Dr. Leslie Abrahams, who affirmed the positive impact of natural gas in lowering carbon emissions.

The report also assessed technological developments, policies, and measures that enhance the efficiency and sustainability of natural gas in the energy sector. It emphasized that LNG is a much cleaner option than coal, particularly in electricity generation, due to the lower emissions from combustion. Furthermore, the report highlighted LNG as a practical, low-carbon energy solution capable of meeting rising global energy demand—especially in developing nations—while helping to strike a balance between energy security and environmental protection.
